The geographical research in Bonn is focused on the following three main areas: water, risk and geomatics. Within the framework of these profile specialisations, nine scientific areas make up the research and teaching portfolio. The programme is supplemented by collaborations in the fields of medical geography, aquatic ecology and nature conservation.
The Geochemistry/Petrology section comprises the working groups in the fields of structural geology, geochemistry, petrology and mineralogy/crystallography.
The Geology section comprises the working groups specialising in hydrogeology, sedimentology and environmental geology.
The Section of Geophysics comprises the working groups in the fields of geophysics/applied geophysics and geodynamics.
The Section of Meteorology comprises the working groups in the fields of Theoretical Meteorology, General Meteorology, Remote Sensing, Climate Dynamics & Statistics and Climate Monitoring.
